Fun Road Trip

Coach Brady Moore here wrapping up our first weekend on the road for NSIC play. We got in last night right around 2:15 in the morning. The roads were not bad and our bus driver did a great job of getting us back. I must say we cannot be happier with our play this weekend. Both nights we came out with everyone on our team ready to play and it showed. We set the tone once again last night jumping out to an early lead and then extending the lead throughout the game.

Offensively it was one of our better shooting nights of the season. The reason for it was we pushed the ball, had excellent ball movement around the perimeter, made the extra pass and then finally we knocked down the wide open shots we had. It was exactly what we wanted to do against UMD. We knew if we could control the tempo of this game it would be a huge feather in our hat and it was. We wore them out by getting up and down the floor, keeping our spacing and always moving on the offensive end. It was a great shooting and passing display let just hope we can carry it over to our next game.

Defensively we were again outstanding for most of the game. Other then a few break downs here or there, which will happen, we were awesome. Our help side was great, we did an outstanding job of helping and recover in the post, digging the ball out of the post and doubling the post when it was possible. On top of that our rotation on the help side if the ball was swung was excellent as well. But the most impressive performance of all was our defensive rebounding. We won the rebounding battle and we did a great job of holding them to one shot on the defensive end. That was a huge key as they are a great offensive rebounding team and we did an excellent job of not letting them push us around. It was very fun to watch. Everyone one of our guys should be proud of the effort they gave this weekend, it really showed what type of team that we can be. At the same time I hope we realize this is the type of effort it takes every night when we step on the floor. Carrying this effort over is going to be huge and hopefully we do on Wednesday when a tough Truman St. team comes to town.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend. I know I am going to enjoy my off day by watching some football and basketball.

Go Warriors!!!

Going for 2-0 on Road Trip

Hi everyone, Coach Brady Moore checking in on the road up here in Duluth. We made it in last nigth around 1:30 in the morning, the roads were not too bad and so we made pretty good time. It was a fun bus ride over here as everyone was in good spirits and the movie we watch was okay.

As for the game last night. As a staff we were very pleased with the effort all of our guys gave. It was a total team effort last night as everyone on the team was into the game and contributed in the win. One of the main reasons we won the game was because our rebounding was outstanding. We did an excellent job of getting offensive rebounds and we held Bemidji to one shot on many possessions on the defensive end. It was exactly what we have been looking for in our guys and they did that last night. Another reason was our offense did a great job of moving the ball and finding the open man. We had a ton of open shots because we moved the ball and made the extra pass for the wide open look instead of taking a shot with a man running at them or a hand in the face. It was great team basketball to watch. Everyone played very well last and no one came out flat. It was great to see and we finally had fun winning a game this year.

Moving on to todays game. Duluth is going to be a very difficult match-up for us but we are looking forward to the challenge. They have some very skilled players that play the 4 and 5 position for them and they will be tough to stop but I know our guys can do it. This will be the most physical game that we have been in to date so it will be interesting to see how our guys react to it. I would think we will enjoy the phsycial play as we do have many guys who like to play this style and are good at it. While Duluth might have an advantage downlow on us I really feel we have a huge advantage on the perimeter. Our guards should be able to do a lot of good things against them and if we are knocking down our outside shots we will be right in this thing. Also even though they are very good inside, I do think we will be able to get some points inside and we have to, to win. If we can get some points inside it will make it much easier for our perimeter guys and I think we have a great opportunity to win. But we must score inside and I think we will. It will be interesting what type of tempo this game is going to be played at. UMD is going to want to slow thing game down and really grind it out, while we will want to get out and run some. For the fans sake and ours lets hope the game is at a tempo that we enjoy.

Well that is all for now. Off to shoot around, hopefully we have another great one tonight.

First NSIC Road Trip for WSU

Hi everyone, coach Brady Moore, reporting in on our current road trip. Well so far the trip has been cold to say the least. Don't know what the temp. fell to last night but it was not above zero that is for sure and I can say this because I had to run across the street to the local Walmart to buy bathroom supplies as I forgot my bathroom kit at home. Nothing new for me, I always forget something when we travel, it is almost like I subconsciously do this as a good luck charm for our team. But usually it is not a huge item like this, more like socks, belt, little things.

Anyway we spent about 6 hours on the road yesterday getting up here. Watched a couple of movies in "The Bucket List" and "Hancock". Personally I would recommend "The Bucket List" to anyone and if you like Will Smith "Hancock" is okay but not a great movie in my eyes. Once up here we headed right over to the gym for practice. We had a good practice, which can be hard when you get right off a bus but I think you can tell our guys have good focus right now. Also it was a physical practice that we don't always see the day before the game as Joel Armstrong had to take a trip to the emergency room to get his face glued after taking a elbow. Nothing serious, Joel said it was the first time he had his face super glued which was pretty funny.

Right now we are going through our daily pre-game on the road routine. We just had breakfast, now getting ready for shoot-around over at the gym again. Then we will head back for a couple hours to relax, go to Subway for pre-game then back to the hotel until 6 when we leave to go and watch the women's team play.

As for tonight's game, it should be a good one. Bemdiji's record is does not show how good of a team they are. After watching their games against Northern St. and Moorhead I must say they should have won both of them and it could have been easily. They had both teams on the ropes but just couldn't get that one big bucket to really put the game out of reach and then both teams went on runs right at the end of the game to come away with a close victory. Tonight we expect to see a ton of motion offense, which they run very well. A couple of their main threats are guards, Seth Haake and Brady Fairbanks. Both can really shoot it and it they get going from the outside they are really tough to stop. Inside they have some nice big men that do a great job of setting screens and then flashing to the bucket for easy scores. On top of that they have one of the better freshman in the league in Bryce Tesdahl. Tesdahl can do a bit of everything as he scores from the inside and outside, he can take you off the dribble and he is a great passer. He just makes everyone around him better, which is something any coach wants in his players.

I think keys for us tonight will once again be rebounding the baskeball. If we can hold them to one shot and we can get ourselves multiple looks at the basket during our possessions we should be okay. We also will need to not let them go where they want offensively, they are very pateint and we will need to be pateint on defense allowing them to make the mistakes on their own. Offensively I think we can get good looks at anytime as long as we are pateint as well. Hopefully we can get our shooter going right away from the outside making them have to extend their defense out past the 3 point line some. This should then open up the middle for driving lanes and for our posts inside. A key for us will be our spacing, when we are spaced correctly we can do some nice things, when we are not we stand and struggle to score.

That's all I have for now. Go Warriors!!

Alumni Update

Hello everyone, Coach Brady Moore here again. I know I have ran into some of you this past weekend and I am trying my best to keep the blog up and going. Have been really busy since we have been back from Hawaii with teaching my classes, getting our guys ready to play and Christmas shopping. Okay maybe not shopping but I do have to say I am done shopping for Christmas presents for the year. How many of you can say that??? But I will say I am going to start to updating this much more now that I do have time. So on with some updates.

This past weekend was again our alumni game and alumni weekend. I would have to say it was a huge success as we had more alumni come back for this event then any other alumni weekend that I have been a part of. So that is great to see. It was awesome not only seeing so many of the players but also their family members. We have been blessed here at WSU to have not only great players but great families that support our guys.

As for the game itself. The purple team won by 2 80-78. (I think this was the first year in a long time that no team broke 100 points) It was a close game throughout but Josh Schneider was able to get a rebound and bucket with six seconds left in the game for the win. While their were not stats kept I think it was safe to say David Zellmann was the leading scorer for both squads. Not far behind him had to be Justin Treptow for the grey squad as he played very well. Also Jon Urbach, Kyle Schlaak, Eric Plitzuweit and Mark Tripp had nice games for the grey team. Others on the purple team who played very well were Matt Lingenfeltser, Pat Hayes III, Brent Riese and Brian Puls. Acutally everyone played very well and it was a fun game to watch. Unfortunately not everyone was able to play in the game. Zach Malvik, John Smith and Scott Adams were all out due to injury but were in attendance.

Now for some updates on some of the guys that were in attendance.

John Smith - John was back for both nights. I am sure those around this weekend were able to grab him for a second but if you were not John is still with the Iowa Energy. He currently is on the injured reserve list with a quad injury. He said it was the first time he has injured his quad so it was different but he is close to being back with the team. Right now he is limited to a lot of shooting in practice he said but hopes to be back to full contact soon. He likes it down there as he has some people he knows in David Zellmann and Brandon Stromer but he said he really misses Winona. And I know his mom does too!

Zach Malvik - Zach is currently not able to play due to a foot injury. The injury is really a mystery as they cannot figure out what exactly is wrong or what is causing the pain. Last week he met with his doctor here in Winona and they are hoping to have some answers soon. While he is not able to play Zach is still keeping active in basketball by coaching a 3-4th grade team in La Crosse along with doing individual workouts for players looking to improve their game. He is hoping to be back on the floor soon.

Quincy Henderson - Q was not able to make it this weekend but he is currently working over in Milwaukee. I have talked to him here some and I am not sure what his job actually is as we always get off the subject and end up talking hoops. I know he misses the game and Winona very much. Expect to see him back for a weekend in January.

Brent Riese - Brent is still in Winona here finishing up school. He will graduate this coming week and then start looking for a job. Congrats Brent on getting your degree!

Jonte' Flowers - I have not heard much from him lately but I have heard he is still doing well over seas. I heard he has a great action picture online that his team took of him but I have not seen it. Also I guess he is going back to his high school days as he is growing his hair out again. I liked that look Jonte'. You can check up on him by following our links area.

David Zellmann - Dave is currently in Des Moines, Iowa working for John Deere in the accounting department. He and his wife are expecting their first child at the end of March which they are very excited about. He still is playing a ton of basketball down in Des Moines as he is in 2 leagues right now. After watching him this weekend I can still see that he can shoot it.

Brandon Stromer - Bradon is currently working for the men's basketball program down at Drake University. He is in his second year as a graduate assistant for them and is really enjoying being a part of the program. He is getting his masters in education.

Jeff O'Donnell - Is working back in his hometown of Rushford, MN in financial planning.

Jon Urbach - Is working in Chicago with an investment firm. Sounds like he really likes what he is doing and is happy to be back in the Midwest after a couple years out east in Boston.

Chad Barfknecht - Chad graduated this past summer from Palmer College of Chiropractic and is now looking to open up his own practice some where near the Winona/LaCrosse area. After 3 long years of school Chad was happy to finally be done with school.

Pat Hayes III- Is still teaching and coaching up in Waconia, Mn. His teams have been some of the top teams in 3AAA the past couple of years and it sounds like this year should be another good one for him as he has some nice young players.

Justin Treptow - Justin finished up his master's degree from WSU this past summer and is now a principal here in the area. I cannot remember what school, sorry Justin.

Brian Puls - Brian is back in his hometown of Richland Center and is in his first year as the head coach of the high school squad.

Eric Plitzuweit - Eric had to give up coaching over at JM in Rochester because he started a new job within the administration for the Rochester school district.

Well that is about all the updates that I have right now. I know I have a couple of others and when they come to me I will post them. Check back in the morning for our Get To Know Our Warriors section. Thanks everyone!
