WSU vs Lewis Pre-Game Notes

The Winona State Warriors (7-4) will play host to the Lewis Flyers (6-3) for the second year in a row today with tip-off set for 3 pm. Last years contest saw a great game between the two teams as Winona St. pulled away down the stretch to pull out a 84-76 victory. In the game the Warriors were lead by David Johnson (17 points) and John Smith (17 points, 10 rebounds), Lewis was lead by Jason Genova (31 points).
This years contest should be no different as the Flyers return a ton of talent from a team that almost took down the National Champion Warriors last year. The Flyers are lead by two senior players in Jason Genova and Brandon Dagans. Both players had solid seasons last year and this year the have been doing much of the same as they are the leading scorers for this years squad and both have the ability to off for big nights. Other players to watch for the Flyers will be point guard Dennis Thomas who moved into the starting line-up this year after coming off the bench last year and power forward Lonnie Robinson who is a great leaper and defender for the Flyers. Another player of note is true freshman center Marty Strus, Strus is 6'10 and is capable of having huge games on the inside.
Some keys to this game will once again come down to the tempo of the game. Lewis is another team that will use the clock looking for that one great shot. But they are also capable of getting up and down as they have some great scoring options. For the Warriors we will need to play a fast paced game that allows us to get the great open looks we have been getting. Defensively this will be a huge challenge for our team as Lewis has a ton of weapons. They can shoot it from the outside and they do a great job of getting to the rim. They basically have the total package so we will need to be at our best on defense the entire game and we will not be able to take possessions off like we did our last time out. We will also need to take better care of the ball then we have been in past games. The amount of turnovers we have had this year have been way too many for a team that has great guards, we need to handle pressure better and make better decisions with the ball. Expect Lewis to put a ton of pressure on the ball and possibly pick up some full court at times.
Overall this should be a great game. The Flyers record is a little deceiving as they are a very very dangerous ball club. We will need to be at our best on Saturday to have a chance. This game has the makings of being a classic and a fun game to watch. Both teams have tremendous shooters which will make this game even more fun to watch.
